Summary

The Acolyteshowrunner Leslye Headland has promised more twists in the origin stories of Osha and Mae, after episode 3’s shocking revelations. The Acolyteepisode 3is an extended flashback, revealing what happened on the planet Brendok some 16 years ago. It’s the origin story of Osha and Mae, but with a twist; it’s clearly told from Osha’s point of view, which means it’s likely to be deceptive. It featured one shocking revelation; thatMother Aniseya claimed to have created the twins, meaning they were born of the Force.

Speaking toEntertainment Weekly,The Acolyteshowrunner Leslye Headland promised that more will be revealed.

Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae) and Mae Aniseya (Amandla Stenberg) in The Acolyte

“If you keep watching the show,we do talk about that and explore that. I would say there isn’t one answer to it. Some characters believe certain things, and other characters believe other things in terms of what she means by that. So you’re going to have to watch and decide which side of that argument you’re on.”

It’s an intriguing comment, not least because it suggests the information about Osha and Mae’s origins will reach other groups. It’s reasonable to assume the “some characters” are members of the coven, while the “other characters” are Jedi.

Osha & Mae’s Origin Story Isn’t Yet Complete

Are they tied to Darth Plagueis?

Leslye Headland’s comment has massive implications for the rest ofThe Acolyte. It hints this is the first of two flashback episodes, with the next one presumably told from Mae’s point of view. If that is the case, it will reveal what really happened - andwhether Mae really was responsible for the deaths of the Coven. It’s quite possible the Jedi learned of the forbiddenForce powersthat apparently created Osha and Mae, and responded in fear.

The really interesting question, though, iswhether the apparently miraculous conception of Osha and Mae is tied to Darth Plagueis. According to Palpatine, his Sith mentor learned how to manipulate the Midi-chlorians into creating life; that sounds suspiciously like Mother Aniseya’s claims inThe Acolyteepisode 3. It’s quite possible the Sith learned thiis technique by studying Osha and Mae, absorbing the “unnatural” powers of the Coven into their own cult.

Headland is well-known for an “onions” approach to storytelling, peeling the layers of her narrative back a little at a time. The Acolyteis clearly taking that approach, setting up some major twists for the future. It will be exciting to see how this story plays out.
