Summary
On its own,Severanceis a very odd and complex television series, but there is one especially peculiar scene that I still can’t wrap my head around two years later. When I watched Apple TV+‘sSeverancefor the first time, I was amazed at the unique and haunting premise of the show. The sci-fi series follows a team of office workers who have had their minds split. Their work selves and home selves are completely separate entities, with different memories and motives. Therefore, when strange things begin to happen,Severance’sunanswered questionsbecome even more important.
Severanceseason 1 offered many answers about the world of Lumon Industries. At theend ofSeveranceseason 1, the office workers, otherwise known as “innies,” briefly switch places with their home selves, known as “outies.” Helly discovers that she is the daughter of Lumon’s CEO, meanwhile Mark learns that he joined the severance program due to his wife’s death, though Gemma may actually be alive. While these revelations were certainly satisfying,I was still left with countless questions at the end ofSeverance. In fact, there is one scene that I still don’t understand at all.

Severance Cast & Character Guide
Apple TV+’s thriller Severance adds a whole new meaning to work-life balance. Here’s a breakdown of the various cast members and their characters.
I Still Don’t Get Severance’s Goat Scene Over 2 Years Later
Severance’s Goats Still Make No Sense
AlthoughSeveranceseason 1 introduced a number of uncanny mysteries, the most confusing of all was the goat scene. InSeveranceseason 1, episode 5, Mark and Helly take a risk by leaving the Macrodata Refinement Department to make a map of the Lumon building. During their journey, they open a door and find a disgruntled office worker feeding a pack of baby goats. To see the goats within the creepy blank walls of Lumon was astonishing enough, but I couldn’t believe it whenSeverancedidn’t offer even a hint of an answer about why the goats were there.
I can’t help but wonder how a bunch of baby goats could fit into the office work being done at Lumon

Two years after the ending ofSeveranceseason 1, I still don’t get the goat scene. While I can be content to let mysteries be mysteries, the goats are simply too weird to ignore. I can’t help but wonder how a bunch of baby goats could fit into the office work being done at Lumon. In some ways, the goats could potentially act as a hintabout what Lumon and Kier Eagan are up to. Yet, the evidence is not really lining up. The goat scene makes me more eager than ever to seeSeveranceseason 2.
No Severance Theory Can Truly Explain Season 1’s Goats
The Goat Theories Are All Unconfirmed
Considering how random the goat scene is, it’s no surprise that viewers have posited their own theories aboutSeverance’sgoats. One strong argument comes from an early draft ofSeverance’sfirst episode. There is a scene where Harmony Cobel demonstrateshow severance worksvia a black rat. Many believe thatLumon is using the goats to test different versions of their technology. Other strong theories suggest the goats are examples of clones or symbolize the god Pan, from Arthur Machen’s novel,The Great God Pan.Though these theories excite me, none of them truly put my curiosity to rest.
Ultimately, I don’t think anySeverancetheory could fully explain the goat scene. Mostly, this is because there simply isn’t enough information to go on. The goat scene inSeveranceseason 1 offers viewers a mere glimpse at the goats, and nothing else. In this way, theories could go in just about any direction and have some merit. I could pick whatever theory seems coolest and put my faith in that. Yet, none of these theories have solid evidence backing them. In this way, the goats arewhatwe need to see inSeveranceseason 2.
Don’t Worry, Severance Will Explain The Goats
Severance Season 2 Will Return To The Goats
As much asSeveranceloves its mysteries,I have no doubt that the series will explain its goatseventually. Every detail inSeveranceseems thought-out and intentional. Though most answers are hidden from audiences at this point, there is likely a reason for that. The goat scene is no different. I believe thatSeveranceseason 2 will return to the goats in some capacity. Even just one more hint about the goats will be a win for the second season.
Severanceseason 2 has no confirmed release date at this time.
All in all, I can’t wait forSeveranceseason 2. I’m anticipating plenty of answers, but also, lots and lots of questions. One day, I’m sure it will all make sense. However, until the day comes, I will continue obsessing overSeveranceand its wild goat scene.
