Summary
WARNING! Spoilers ahead for Scarlett #1Ninja have always been a major part of theG.I. Joefranchise, andthe new Energon Universe miniseriesScarlettis continuing that proud tradition. While Scarlett has always been connected romantically to G.I. Joe’s ninja commando Snake Eyes, she has a deep connection with an entirely different ninja character in Skybound’s new shared continuity.
Scarlett#1 – written by Kelly Thompson, with art by Marco Ferrari – opens with the title character infiltrating a high-class party in Monaco to investigate claims of human trafficking. While there, she recognizes an old friend: the ninja known as Jinx.

Jinx breaks up the party with a group of ninja enforcers, rescuing a young woman. Scarlett is released from her military contract for getting directly involved, after which she is approached by Stalker toinfiltrate Clan Arashikage, a ninja stronghold in Japan that Jinx is working with.
Giving Scarlett this deep connection to Jinx is an intriguing wrinkle toG.I. Joe’s new continuity, and it will be very interesting to see how this plays into the story whenever Snake Eyes makes his Energon Universe debut.

InScarlett#1, readers learn that Jinx and Scarlett were quite close in the past, even living together as roommates for a time. Jinx then disappeared for two years, leaving Scarlett to wonder what happened to her old friend. Stalker explains that he trained Jinx to work undercover with the Arashikage, but lost contact with her until Scarlett saw her in Monaco. Jinx left Scarlett a message via a secret code at the party, which leads Stalker to suspect that Jinx is still on their side and hasn’t betrayed them by joining the Arashikage.
Jinx first appeared in Marvel Comics’G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero#59 in 1987, where she was portrayed as an Arashikage ninja recruited into G.I. Joe by Snake Eyes

During the course ofthe miniseries' debut issue, Stalker recruits Scarlett to infiltrate the ninja clan and gain their trust, and determine whether Jinx is still on their side, or has turned against them. After sneaking into the Arashikage compound in Japan, Scarlett gets emotional upon seeing her old friend, once more highlighting how close the two women truly were. This is best exemplified by the secret code they developed in the past, a series of symbols that only Scarlett and Jinx could understand.
The role of the Arashikage – and the complex dynamics ofJoe’sninjas – is one of the most exciting, and intriguing, aspects of the Energon Universe readers are eager to watch unfold.
