“We’ll See”: Jeremy Renner Addresses Mayor Of Kingstown Return Beyond Season 3
The following contains spoilers for Mayor of Kingstown season 3, episode 1
Summary
Mariam’sMayor of Kingstownseason 3 fate after the season 2 cliffhanger is addressed by series co-creator Hugh Dillon. That cliffhanger, which saw Mariam hit by bullets during a wild shootout between Milo’s men and Kyle McLusky (Taylor Handley), and being rushed to the hospital with serious wounds, left Dianne Wiest’s character’s life hanging in the balance.Mayor of Kingstownseason 3, episode 1 immediately removed all doubt as to Mariam’s fate, showing her being buried in Kingstown Cemetery.
Mayor of Kingstownco-creator Dillon has much to say about the fate of Mariam McLusky, the significance of her death to the show’s bigger themes, and what he and co-creator Taylor Sheridan are trying to say by killing off major characters, in remarks made exclusively toScreen Rant. Check out his thoughts below:

The thing that I love about it is, those are the intricacies of human emotion that I’m talking about that fascinates me in how we absorb death and destruction and violence with our loved ones. I have lived elements of that with friends who have passed away, and violently or not, to be able to explore that is exciting because we’re not pulling any punches. And then the other thing that when Taylor [Sheridan] and I first started this show and talking about it, we wanted to make it real and authentic and a movie, and to do that, you have to start with no one is safe and nothing is sacred.
This was like 15 years ago, Taylor had that opening of Mitch, before we even knew that Kyle Chandler would play Mitch, getting taken out out of the gate. And that was like 2004 or ‘05, it went back a long time ago, just that initial thing. And that kind of has been our north star ever since, because that is where we exist, that’s where I exist in reality and with people, places, and things and friends. Life is fragile and unpredictable, and for some reason, we think it isn’t.
How Mayor of Kingstown Raises The Stakes By Killing Off Characters Like Mariam And Mitch
Dillon and Sheridan showed viewers exactly what they had in mind withMayor of Kingstownwhen, in the first episode of season 1, Kyle Chandler’sMitch McLuskywas killed off. The move of hiring Chandler, then killing his character right away, played somewhat like a stunt, and it was an effective one. The move also helped set the tone for the series, demonstrating, as Dillon explains, that no one in this world is safe.
Mariam McLusky’s death continues theMayor of Kingstowntradition of placing the McLusky family in the line of fire, with sometimes fatal consequences, leaving the survivors to pick up the pieces. Mariam’s death is particularly horrific for Kyle, because it was his bullet, fired during the chaos of a shoot-out with Milo and his men, that killed her. Kyle now has to deal with the emotional fall-out from Mariam’s shooting, while he and Mike handle the actual fall-out from Milo’s death, the arrival of new bad guy Konstantin, and everything else going down in Kingstown.
