House of the Dragon’s Emmys flop ends staggering Game of Thrones record
House of the Dragon Season 2 failed to pick up even a single Emmy nomination this year. As a result, it just ended a massive Game of Thrones record.
During its eight-season run spanning 2011-2019, HBO’sGame of Thronesmade history at the Emmys, the most prestigious television awards.
Each and every season of the adaptation was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, of which it took home the award four times. Though in total, Game of Thrones recorded a whopping 164 Emmy nominations, winning 59 awards to make it the most successful drama series in history, by that metric.
House of the Dragon Season 1 carried on the legacy with eight further nominations, including for Outstanding Drama Series. However, the streak has now come to an end. Season 2 failed to earn even a single Emmy nomination.
House of the Dragon Season 2 falls short at the Emmys
The2025 Emmy nominationswere revealed on July 15, and House of the Dragon Season 2 was nowhere to be found.
This marks the first time any Game of Thrones or Game of Thrones-adjacent spinoff has missed out on the Outstanding Drama Series category. This year, the following eight shows make up the list:
But that’s not the only damage. House of the Dragon was entirely absent across the board, receiving a grand total of zero Emmy nominations.
While Season 2 certainly wasn’t perfect,we praised itfor “building on strengths from the first season and working on the weaknesses.” Alas, aportion of the community lashed outnonetheless.
Season 1 of the first Game of Thrones spinoff aired in 2022, with Season 2 following two years later.Season 3is expected to follow the cadence by arriving at some stage in 2026. Meanwhile, the second Game of Thrones spinoff was just delayed, withA Knight of the Seven Kingdomsnow also set to premiere in 2026.
