Summary
Gotham City is one of the most iconic cities in comic books, and as the years march on it’s been shown that the city will continually grow more and more advanced. Eventually, it seems thatBatmanwill need a major tech upgrade as Gotham City transforms from the Gothic city it is today to a dystopian cyberpunk landscape — mech suits included.
Fans have seen a few glances at a futuristic version of Gotham, especially inBatman Beyond, but there’s another interesting look at the future of Gotham inDetective Comics#27’s story “Twenty-Seven” by Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy. This glance at the future shows thatBatman’s tech continually evolves to match the new villains that plague Gotham.

Not only isBatman shown wearing a mechanized suitto battle against a new version of Chemo and an unknown villain, but Robin’s new suit is similarly mechanized as well. The Gotham landscape is also notably cyberpunk in design, and things go even further whenBatman is shown using a giant mech to battle against a giant robotic Talon from the Court of Owls.

Glimpses at DC andMarvel’s potential futures are always fun, and entire franchises are based on this simple idea. Series and titles like Marvel’sSpider-Man 2099or DC’sBatman Beyond— the show and the comics — are entirely based on the idea of looking into the far future of familiar settings. It’s exciting to see how a city changes over a few hundred years, and with secret organizations like the Court of Owls who are obsessed with ruling Gotham, there’s no reason to believe that these groups will disband with time. So, naturally, their technology will have to increase with the times.
Gotham will always be a dark and dirty place infested with crime, but as time marches on, that crime will change.

A lot of Batman’s villains are based on the familiar “mad scientist” trope, including characters like Mr. Freeze, who is a skilled inventor and scientist, or factions like the Court of Owls, who have infinite wealth and resources and would be able to design something like a giant mech. Gotham will always be a dark and dirty place infested with crime, but as time marches on, that crime will change. Instead of the regular criminals who just want to mug people,Batman will eventually have to start dealing with mutants, as seen inThe Dark Knight Returnsby Frank Miller, or giant mech warriors and mechanized villains, as seen here.
Batman and Robin Continue to Protect a Cyberpunk Gotham City
Batman Will Always Have the Gadgets to Save the Day
Batman is one of DC’s greatest mad scientists, and he excels at brilliant inventions. As the world’s technology continues to advance and Batman is exposed to new materials and practices, his gear and gadgets are going to change as well. WhileBatmanstarted off in a cloth Batsuit and just a few smoke pellets to his name, over time, he’ll advance to hover gliders and giant mech suits that can tear through buildings with ease. Eventually, Gotham City will change from that rain-soaked city that can barely function into an absolute mech lover’s dream in DC’s dark future.
