Summary

Capcom’s announced the return ofDead Risingin the most disappointing way possible. The zombie title was praised upon its release on Xbox 360 in 2006 for utilizing the consoles' hardware - which was a significant leap from the previous console generation - to depict a shopping mall full of zombies, with hundreds appearing on screen at any given time. However, the series has largely laid dormant since the release ofDead Rising 4underperformed in 2016.

The officialDead RisingYouTube account suddenly sprung back to life with the reveal of theDead Rising Deluxe Remaster(orDRDRas it’s abbreviated to at the end), a new “updated” release of the 2006 game that is reported to have a “brand new look.”

The footage shown is from the game’s opening sequence, in whichphotojournalist Frank West arrives at a zombie-infested shopping mall, and his character model is notably different from the original, appearing slightly older in comparison with a new hairline and far more facial details than he had inDead Rising,Dead Rising 2: Off The RecordandDead Rising 4.

Whether it’s Final Fight, Dino Crisis, or Dead Rising, Capcom should give some of its classic series the revival they deserve.

Is The Game Worth Buying A Third Time?

Bizarrely, the trailer acknowledges thatDead Risingalready received an HD remaster back in 2016 to bring it to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 generations. Those remasters served a purpose, as PlayStation players receivedDead Rising 2andOff The Recordon PS3, but not the first game in the series, and the trailer addresses that, stating that “Even more players got to experience the timeless game design” with their release.

As these versions are playable on new consoles via backward compatibility, it does pose the question as to what makes theDeluxe Remasterso special that players should purchase the game for a third time, especially whenother titles have simply received free “new-gen” patches to improve performance or visuals this generation. Currently, the teaser trailer doesn’t provide much information about whether there will be any new features outside of the visual changes, and its description merely says, “Stay tuned for more info soon.”

While it’s nice to see Capcom turning its attention to theDead Risingseries again afterDead Rising 5was cancelled, ifDead Rising Deluxe Remasteris merely a remaster of a remaster with a new coat of paint, that makes its reveal feel somewhat underwhelming, especially with rumors of a full remake circulating as recently as last year. Hopefully, the additional information promised by Capcom will come soon and will elaborate further on what makes this new release worth buying the 2006 zombie title once again.
